Afro MIo

Afro MioAfro Mio is a harmonious blend of rich vocals borne on a wave of rhythmic conga and melodious African guitar. Ben Pathy is one of the founder members of Afro Mio, which means “My Africa”. He is a singer, author and composer from Angola, specialising in traditional African music, Rumba, Soukous, Kizomba and Salsa. He started his professional career in 1979 as a choir director. He has recorded two solo albums (Felicidade Igual, 1996 and Destino Incerto, 1999) and has performed internationally. In the UK, Ben has performed with Infusion Ensemble and his own band Afro Mio formed in 2008. He has appeared on Luambona TV’s Real Talk Show and WCRFM’s Out Of Africa radio programme.

Alpha Elema, from Democratic Republic of Congo, is a student with a great passion for music. He is an instrumentalist focusing mainly in percussion and drums. He started playing musical instruments when he was very young with family and friends in church groups. He is a dedicated teen player who aims high to achieve more, only the sky is the limit. As a percussionist, he has also helped with other group projects in delivering extraordinary performances within the UK.

Over the last 3 years Afro Mio have performed extensively across the Midlands at venues such as MAC, Symphony Hall, Four Squares Festival in Birmingham City Centre, Journeys Festival in Leicester and many more. Ben has also been involved with a number of collaborations with other artists, including Kora player Dan Wilkins who now plays regularly with the band.

Charming, engaging and beautiful, this is music to enrich the soul.
