Tony Dudu
We are very pleased to welcome back Tony Dudu, acclaimed virtuoso guitarist originally from Guinea Bissau, West-Africa. On moving to the UK In 2007 Tony has worked with Kudashe Matimba’s band Harare, from Zimbabwe, a regular to our programme. Tony performs with his band “Gumbe Jazz” – A fusion of West-African rhythms blended with Latin grooves, South African rhythms and Jazz.

Didier Kisala
Didier Kisala is the founder member of Birmingham based Congolese band The Redeemed, regulars to Celebrating Sanctuary events. He also performs with a smaller ensemble to create a beautiful and soulful performance. Didier was recently involved in a British Red Cross project, to release a ground-breaking concept album based on the real-life experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, in collaboration with artists such as Robert Plant and Scoobious Pip.

All donations go towards supporting our activities with asylum seekers and refugee communities

Virtuoso Syrian Kanun player Maya Youssef has a unique approach to playing the traditional instrument, the kanun.  She has performed world-wide and has won the Exceptional Talent award. She is currently working on her debut album, and researching “Music Healing for Syrian Refugee Children” for her PhD.  Maya is a regular on the BBC and featured at the BBC Proms at The Royal Albert Hall amongst other prestigious venues and festivals. Described as “elegant” and “entrancing” by BBC Radio 3.

Didier Kisala, founder member of Birmingham based Congolese band The Redeemed, performs with a smaller ensemble to create a beautiful and soulful performance.

A regular contributor to Celebrating Sanctuary events, Didier has performed at BE Festival, ORT Cafe, Stone Road Initial Accommodation for Asylum Seekers and New Collaborations events with Spoken Word artists.

Didier was also involved with project by the British Red Cross, to release a ground-breaking concept album based on the real-life experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, in collaboration with some of the country’s top musicians and internationally acclaimed artists. The Long Road album will see artists including spoken word poet Scroobius Pip, singer-songwriter Kindness, Tinariwen and the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars. Brit Award winner Ethan Johns, who has worked with the Kings of Leon, Laura Marling and The Vaccines, will produce the album. Didier had the opportunity to record with Scroobius and Ethan, over the summer, at the prestigious Real Wold Studios.

Join us for a sharing with Patrice Naiambana, following on from a phase of exploration, development and collaboration, working with refugee musicians sharing stories of migration.

African Performing Artist from Sierra Leone Patrice Naiambana is an Interdisciplinary Storyteller with wide international experience. He is the Founder and Chief Officer for Tribal Soul Arts, facilitating creative Labs for social change and dialogue using creativity. He has worked in theatre, radio, television and film. He is currently working and touring his new solo show Perception Gap and ensemble piece Grave Diggers with Birmingham Performance artists, Artistic Directors Lola Adodo and Jendayi Selassie of New Scopes and Wadahdah Dance CIC.

In the last year Simo Lagnawi was nominated for 2 SONGLINES awards for 2014 BEST NEWCOMER, and BEST ARTIST. His Solo Debut Album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ last September. Simo has performed at many International festivals and venues. Playing traditional Gnawa (sacred trance music from Morocco) and Gnawa Fusion with, Electric Jalaba, Gnawa Griot, and Gnawa Blues Allstars. He performs for ‘Live Music Now’ a Charity which bring exceptional music into the lives of under-priviledged people with ‘Gnawa Yinga’. Simo continuously pushes new boundaries fusing Gnawa with music from other countries.

Zvinoera
Zvinoera African Blues is a Zimbabwean band based in Walsall, a new project from Zimbabwean poet and mbira player Stewart Kunaka. They play a blend of Zimbabwean traditional music performed for various occasions. Their performances often include: poetry, and mbira music accompanied by drums and percussion.

Maia brings a dynamic new colour to Kenya’s contemporary musical landscape. Born and raised in Nairobi to a German/Italian mother and Kenyan father, Maia’s unique heritage is combined into a fresh sound weaving jazz, funk, folk & blues all sprinkled with swahili spice.

Since returning to Kenya in 2007, Maia has established her current live act, a high-energy 6-piece band that has been making waves throughout East Africa, gracing the stages of prominent festivals across Africa.
