REFUGEE WEEK FESTIVAL 2015
Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham and partners have a full and diverse programme of events involving local, national and international artists. Each year in June we present a World Music and Arts Festival to showcase the contribution of refugee artists and artists from areas of conflict around the world
Sat 13th June – Refugee Week Launch event at ORT Cafe with Trikhon Theatre Plus Spoken Work and Music with members of the Redeemed, Writers Without Borders and guest poets.
8pm – entry £5
Sun 14th June – Seun Kuti at The Drum, Aston The youngest son of international legend Fela Kuti, brings his father’s sixteen piece funk fuelled orchestra, to The Drum. 8pm – entry £10.50 – £15
Wed 17th June – Afro Mio at Stone Road - Performance by Afro Mio for residents at Stone Road Initial Accommodation for Asylum Seekers.
Fri 19th June – Afro Mio at Jazzlines – Symphony Hall Foyer 5pm (Free entry)
Fri 19th June – Stella Chiweshe and Afro Mio at Ort Cafe, Moseley Road
Zimbabwean Shona Mbira artist Stella Chiweshe plus Afro Mio Stella Chiweshe 8pm, Afro Mio 9pm – entry £5
Sun 21st June – Celebrating Sanctuary Festival at MAC Birmingham
A full day of activities, workshops and live performances including:
- Kadialy Kouyate – From a great line of Kouyate griots in Senegal, Kadialy’s spellbinding blend of kora and voice has been welcomed in many prestigious venues around the world
- The Redeemed – Birmingham- based group with members hailing from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their music reflects their heritage and creates a beautiful and soulful performance.
- Harare – fronted by the exuberance and charisma of Zimbabwean singer and marimbist Kudaushe Matimba.
- Hassan Salih Nour – Sudanese singer and musician – a talented and captivating performer.
2-8pm (This is a FREE event for all the family)
Wed 24th June – The Redeemed at BE Festival
Celebrating Sanctuary in partnership with BE Festival present a live performance by Didier Kisala and members of The Redeemed
Sat 27th June – Yabba Funk at Muzikstan
Celebrating Sanctuary in partnership with Muzikstan present London based, Ghanaian Afro funk band Yabba Funk plus DJ’s 8pm – The Old Print Works – Moseley Rd – £6 early bird – £8 advance- £10 on the door
